Finding New Zealand's Scientific Heritage

Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand

Guest editors: Simon Nathan and Rebecca Priestley

Submission deadlines: 31 March 2016 and 30 June 2016

In November 2015, Victoria University of Wellington hosted a conference, Finding New Zealand's Scientific Heritage, to acknowledge a significant year for New Zealand science history. The year marked 150 years since James Hector arrived in Wellington to set up many of New Zealand's national science organisations and 100 years since Ernest Marsden, who later became head of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, arrived at Victoria University.

At this conference, delegates heard papers about Hector, Marsden, the organisations they set up and led, and their contemporaries. They also heard stories not already so well known: about mātauranga Māori, women in science, and how a historical perspective can help to inform the future of science. The conference programme, with abstracts, is available here.

As a record of this 2015 conference – and as part of the Royal Society of New Zealand's own 150th anniversary commemorations, two of the journal's 2017 issues – in March 2017 and June 2017 – will be devoted to publishing papers from the conference. Papers not presented at the conference may be considered if they are seen to cover topics, such as women in science, not adequately covered by conference papers: please contact the editors for advice.

The guest co-editors of these issues, Drs Simon Nathan and Rebecca Priestley, invite conference attendees to submit short communications, of 1500–3000 words in length. These may be well-documented but short pieces of original research, extended abstracts, or may present results which are indicative only, and therefore of interest.. Longer papers, up to 5000 words may be considered, but we would like the majority to be short communications in order to include the full range of papers presented.
